Joseph is located near the south end of the Wallowa Valley, a valley of 35 miles stretching from Wallowa to the north, through Lostine and Enterprise, nearly to Wallowa Lake to the south. Joseph's last lumber mill was sold and dismantled in 2005.

The once booming logging economy has given way to the arts, with local bronze foundries and artists making up a significant part of the local economy, as does farming and ranching. Joseph is located just 1 1/2 miles north of Wallowa Lake, and offers many fine Bed and Breakfasts, a motel, several bars and restaurants, foundries to tour, and many other businesses. Among the many activities in the calendar, the famous Chief Joseph Days features a parade down Main Street that includes a wild horse stampede, followed by the 4 day long Chief Joseph Days Rodeo, a PRCA event.

Joseph is home to General Land Office, located in the Sports Corral complex at the north end of town.
