The city of Lostine was incorporated in 1903. Located in Wallowa County, Oregon, Lostine is where the Lostine and Wallowa Rivers converge. The city is very small, with a total area of 0.3 miles. Lostine boasted a population of 263 at the 2000 census. Lostine is located on Hwy 82, and is about halfway between the Wallowa County seat of Enterprise and the City of Wallowa.
The Lostine River Road runs south from Lostine, paralleling the Lostine River and leading to trails, camping sites and public lands with spectacular hiking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing. High altitude lakes from the trails access the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area "lake basin," where some isolated lakes are visited by few people each year. Elk, deer, eagles and other forest wildlife are abundant, making the area a destination summer vacation place for fortunate travelers.
