Enterprise, Oregon

Enterprise is the county seat of Wallowa County, Oregon.  It is also the county's largest city, with a population of 1895 reported in the 2000 census.  Approximately 1,500 additional people live in the hills and valley's surrounding Enterprise, most living on small farms and ranches.

The name Enterprise came from a decision at a tent meeting in 1887, although the town was not incorporated until 1889.   Once the center of a booming logging economy the town has swelled and receded with the increase and then the demise of logging, and stabilized with the rest of the county's population in the last 25 years.  Enterprise is home to the county court, sheriff, district attorney, city government, USFS, Oregon State Police, a hospital (new in 2007), a fuel capable airport, and many small businesses, including auto dealerships, a hotel, motels, restaurants, bars, medical and dental clinics, and antique, book, grocery and other stores.

Enterprise is located approximately 6 miles north of Wallowa Lake on Hwy 82, and 45 miles south of the Washington state border, accessed by Hwy 3, which runs through beautiful and spectacular "north country" scenery to Clarkston, Washington.

Several very nice Bed and Breakfast or country inns and a hotel with a pool offer traditional shelter, while camp grounds and RV parks offer outdoors alternatives.

The Wallowa River and Prairie Creek offer excellent fishing, while the Wallowa Whitman National Forest and the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area offer hiking, horseback riding, camping, hunting and more fishing, all very close to town.
