Wallowa, Oregon

Established in 1871 the city of Wallowa had a population of 869 in the 2000 census, in an area of 0.6 square miles.  The town's main street is Hwy 82 (also called the Wallowa Lake Hwy), which runs from La Grande and US Hwy 84  to it's eventual dead end passed Wallowa Lake.  Wallowa was once a booming logging town with several local mills nearby.  Farming and ranching is still the largest industry in the area, as the town now has few local businesses, among them a bank, grocery stores, a bar, restaurants, pharmacy, medical clinic, and small service businesses.  The town is set at 2950 feet above sea level, and has one of the longest growing seasons in Wallowa County.

Bear Creek flows north from the mountains of the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area and Wallowa Whitman National Forest to just north of the town.  Visitors can drive from Wallowa south on Road, which becomes a Forest Service Road accessing the public lands of the forest, and spectacular hiking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing in the area.  Trails from the area afford access to the area's higher altitude "lake basin,"  where some lakes in the area see few visitors each year.
